The following is provided as an unofficial summary of the above dated meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education. SUMMARY
The meeting began with the swearing in of the two new Board Members, Mrs. Nancy Hahn and Mr. Loy Kesner. Following this the election of Board Officers was conducted with the selection of Mr. Kenneth Pack as Chairperson and Mrs. Margaret Shriver as Vice-Chair.

« Mr. Rick Perkins – Hardy County Parks and Recreationi Community Development Committee
« Mrs. Nancy Hahn – Hardy County Extension Service Board & 4-H Camp Association
« Mr. Loy Kesner – South Branch Careet and Technical Center
Information on proposed bids for utilizing the SBA School Access Safety Grant funds were presented and approved for distribution.
Information was provided on the FY08 Audit and Bids for Auditing Services for the next three years. The Board approved Tetrick and Bartlett Accounting Firm for these services.
Mr. Robert Hammons, representing Potomac Bowling Lanes, approached the Board with regard to establishment of High School Bowling Leagues. The Board agreed to havethis information presented to Principals and Athletic Directors for their questions and considerations.
Information was provided to the Board on the Appeal to the State Public Service Commission for the Town of Moorefield to provide sewer service to Moorefield Intermediate School.
The Board approved a surplus computer sale for the end of July.
The decision of the Circuit Court of Kanawha County to uphold the decision of the Hardy County Board of Education in the appeal of the IV Grievience Decision in regard to Tracy Haukland was presented.
A student In-County Transfer was approved.
Public Comments
Mr. Brad Simmons represented the HCEA. Welcomed the Board Members and addressed the Board regarding a future needs assessment being conducted among members and being placed on future agendas.
Mr. Kenneth Pack addressed the Board regarding future Board effectiveness and change. Presented a draft of “Operational Directives” for consideration at a future Board meeting.

The following Substitute Service Personnel jobs require a High School diploma, or GED. Individuals must pass a background and reference check and complete ten (10) hours of training before successfully completing a classification assessment. Additional requirements are noted for each classification:
« Substitute Cooks – completion of food handlers course
« Substitute Secretaries
« Substitute Custodians
« Substitute Instructional Aides – must be willing to complete a paraprofessional endorsement within five (5) years of employment as a regular full time instructional aide.
« Substitute Bus Operator – must have CDL endorsement prior to enrolling in program to be certified as a School Bus Operator.

« Countywide Speech/Language Pathologist – MA or MS in Speech/Language Pathology, may be eligible for National Board supplement with county stipend for ASHA certification
« English Language Arts – MMS/EHHS – Teach reading at Moorefield Middle School in the A.M., travel to East Hardy High School daily to teach English/Language Arts/Theater. Must be certified to teach grade 7 Reading and grade 12 English/Language Arts.
« Extracurricular Bus Run – from East Hardy High School to Moorefield to EWVCTC, MMS, then to SBVCTC to East Hardy High School, must be able to meet regular bus schedule within the school year. Leaves East Hardy High School approximately 11:30 a.m. and returns to meet regular bus evening run schedule. $4,000.00 per school year.
« Team/Coaching Assistants for Fall Sports (formally known as ‘volunteer’ coach): Must have a high school diploma, background and reference check, and completed the WVSSAC First Aid and coaching training for those applying who are not professional educators. These trainings must be completed before applying and being hired for the assignment. Must be eligible for a coaching license through WVDE, and is responsible for all cost associated with the license. Previous coaching experience is also required. This individual works directly under the Head Coach and will be responsible to the principal of the school, or designee. Minimal pay of $1.00 per year/season. These coaches are limited to the number of paid coaches per sport.
Mission Statement Accomplishments
Mr. Kenneth Pack thanked the new Board members for their contributions to the meeting and appreciated the Board members electing him President and looked forward to working with them.
Mrs. Margaret Shriver commended the summer school staff and how well the program is going and the enthusiasm shown by the students.
Mr. Loy Kesner thanked the voters for their support and looks forward to a new beginning for Hardy County Schools.
Mrs. Nancy Hahn extended appreciation for the support to be elected. Thanked the Athletic volunteers who helped with students over the summer which is an example of giving back to our schools and community.
Mrs. Sharon Hammer welcomed the new Board members and extended appreciation to Mr. Doug Boswell for his contributions to Hardy County Schools.
Mr. Ronald Whetzel reported on his visit to summer school and the outstanding work that was seen.
The next meeting of the Hardy County Board of Education is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Hardy County Board of Education Office on July 21, 2008. It will begin with a work session with WVDOE personnel from approximately 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., followed by the regular scheduled Board of Education meeting at 6:00 p.m.
