Library/Media Specialist

 

TITLE: Library/Media Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:

As set forth by the West Virginia Department of Education in the Minimum Standards for the Licensure of West Virginia School Personnel with at least a Bachelor’s Degree and be fully certified in her/his area of specialization (librarian) as designated.

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

 

SUPERVISES:  Person(s) designated by the Principal.

 

JOB GOAL:                   To provide all students and faculty with an enriched library environment   containing a wide variety and range of materials to enhance the curriculum and  intellectual growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of library resources.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:       Ten months (200 days) per year.  Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent and the Board.

 

EVALUATION:   Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.

 

Performance Standards:

7.                 Maintains and upgrades professional skills.

8.                 Meets professional responsibilities reflected in attendance, punctuality, appearance and verbal/nonverbal communication with students-teachers-parents.

9.                 Promotes and maintains positive pupil-parent-teacher relationships.

10.             Adheres to Teacher Code of Conduct.

 11.       Demonstrates sound understanding of technology operations and concepts.

12.       Adheres to established laws, policies, rules and regulations.

Performance Responsibilities:

 

1.         Operate and supervise the library.

2.         Evaluate, select, acquire, catalogue (by computer), classify, circulate and           maintain library materials.

3.         Maintain books and materials in order on the shelves using the Dewey

Decimal System for nonfiction books.

4.         Solicits teachers to have input into selection of materials best suited for their      subject matter areas.

5.         Assist teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials (for use in the classroom or for selection to purchase for the library), and make library materials available to supplement the instructional program.

6.         Inform teachers and other staff members concerning new materials the library      acquires.

7.         Coordinate scheduling for the use of the library when not used for classes when available.

8.         Maintain a comprehensive and efficient computer system for cataloging all         library materials, and instruct teachers and students on use of the system.


 

9.         Arrange for inter-library loan of materials of interest for use by teachers/students.

10.        Help students discover the rewards of reading through research and Internet.

11.        Work with teachers in planning those assignments likely to lead to extended use of library resources.  Put books being used for research for class use; return to shelves when research is finished; and schedule classes in library for non-            research.

12.        Promote and encourage the use of library materials by arranging workshops, promotional displays and exhibits on bulletin board in library area.

14.        Promote appropriate conduct of students using library facilities and maintain a quiet atmosphere conducive to work and study.

15.        Help students develop habits of independent reference work and  develop          skills in the use of reference materials and Internet.

16.        Participate at curriculum or training meetings.

17.        Teach library skills appropriate to grade level and CSOs.

18.        Assume normal duties of other professional staff.

19.        Preview, skim and/or reviews library materials.

20.        Provide current magazines for students and teachers use; retain old magazines   for use by students as a research source (Middle/High Schools).

21.        Write up overdue book notices and collect fines for overdue library materials.

22.        Prepare and present library needs to the principal, annually.

23.        Exhibit proficiency in the operation of computers including boot-up, print operations, general trouble shooting, knowledge of and ability to supervise Internet use, knowledge of and teaching proficiency in computer research software. Assists students as necessary.


 

24.        Librarian are encouraged to participate actively in library and other educational and professional associations on the local, regional, state and national level.

25.        Maintain circulation records of materials used.

26.        Repair worn and damaged books and/or weed obsolete and worn materials         from the collections.

27.        Supervise the daily routine necessary for the smooth operation of the                 library/media center.

28.        Instruct and supervise library helpers.

29.        Maintain responsibility to facilitate distance- learning courses at the middle/high school levels.

30.      Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
