Dear Parents/Guardians,
We want to bring your attention to important changes in the law regarding Compulsory School Attendance in West Virginia, specifically state code §18-8-4. Please note that these changes are mandated by state law and are not decisions made by Hardy County Schools.
According to the updated state law, the following are the only recognized excused absences:
- Medical or dental appointments with a written excuse from a physician or dentist
- Personal illness or injury of the student or a family member (limited to 10 per year)
- Death in the family
- Judicial obligations or court appearances
- Military requirements for students who are enlisted or enlisting
Any other absences will be classified as unexcused.
To ensure proper recording of absences, please provide documentation to the school within 3 instructional days after your child returns. If this documentation is not submitted within the specified timeframe, the absence will be marked as unexcused.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and understand the concerns that may arise from this change. However, it is important to emphasize that we must follow state law.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in prioritizing school attendance.
Sincerely,
Hardy County Schools Attendance Office

Congratulations to all of our Golden Ticket finders, who each received a one pound bar of chocolate!
Keep up the great work selling chocolate!

Congratulations to Desiree Pratt the winner of the mini frig full of cash today!!
Keep selling the chocolate to earn more prizes!

In Ms. Billmeyer's room:
This week we read the story, "Picnic at Mudstock Meadow" by Patricia Polacco
The vocabulary included the words swamp and marsh. We dug into swamps with reading texts and learned about the importance of cattails! Did you know that cattails contain an antiseptic gel in them? How about the fact that you can cook and eat the bottom of the stalks? Well, my class dug into cattails and then tried them after we cooked them!

MIS picture day in on October 8.

Last evening, we were alerted to violent threats against schools circulating on social media, involving several institutions statewide and regionally. These threats, while often intended to cause widespread disruption and fear, are being treated with the utmost seriousness.
We are actively working with the Department of Homeland Security, WV State Police, and local law enforcement. Based on the current intelligence, these threats have been deemed not credible. However, as a precaution, you will notice increased law enforcement at our schools tomorrow. The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority.
Please remember that it is critical to report potential threats directly to law enforcement or school officials rather than repeatedly sharing screenshots on social media, which only serves to spread fear and confusion.
Any threats made against our schools are considered acts of terrorism and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a safe environment for our students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sheena Van Meter
Superintendent

MIS PTO is doing a Moorefield clothing/spirit gear fundraiser. This is strictly online, no money is to be sent in to the school.

Announcement:
MIS would like to share a brief announcement. After much consideration and research, MIS has decided not to use the Accelerator Reader program this year. We will still have a focus on reading and still be rewarding students for their achievements, it will just be done differently this year. Please be patient as we work to develop and launch our own in house reading incentives program this school year!
Thank you~MIS Staff

Hardy County Schools will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day. Have a safe and fun holiday!

Reminder as of today: If you are emailing in a transportation request it must go to Lacey
lacey.koontz@k12.wv.us
Regena's email will no longer work and your transportation request will get missed.
Thank you!

MIS is saddened that today is Ms. Regena's last day at MIS, but excited for her to enjoy her retirement! She has been the beacon of light at the front door of MIS for 11 years. If you come by before 11:30 today, wish her well! She will definitely be missed!

Parents please complete the MIS survey and let us know what you have interests and questions about so we can better serve you throughout the year.
